There are no prizes for being able to down horrible tasting protein shakes. Sure it may make you feel like a man and that may have got you some points in college but there is an alternative. You can still get all the nutrients you need and have it tasting great at the same time. Jazz up your next shake with one or two of these protein shake 'mixers'.
Coffee
Protein Shake
Instant will work fine, but a shot of espresso always tastes better for a coffee lover. Add one serving and some ice to your vanilla shake for an iced coffee hit. Another option is to add it to your chocolate shake for a nice, smooth mocha shake.
Having this shake pre workout for an extra boost as the caffeine will also give you the stimulant effect.
Peppermint Extract
Mint makes anything taste good! And using the extract won't impact on the nutritional content of your shake. For the best results here add a few drops to your chocolate shake for a mouth-watering mint chocolate chip ice cream flavour.
Peanut Butter
Roll how you like here but I'm a smooth peanut butter type of guy. Always go for natural, freshly ground peanut butter from the health store instead of the sugar laden supermarket stuff. Peanut butter will make anything taste good but the best flavors to mix with will be chocolate or natural (unflavored) protein powder. One tablespoon will be enough to add about eight grams of healthy fats, three grams of protein, plus some extra fiber, vitamins and minerals.
This type of shake is better suited as a meal replacement or as a snack between your big meals. The extra fat and fiber from the peanut butter will help to slow its digestion and give a steady release of energy.
Frozen Berries
A cup of berries will transform any bland an boring shake into a delightful, nutrient rich one. Frozen berries are just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts but, just as ice does, it will help to thicken up your shake. Another hidden benefit of berries in your shake is that they will make it nice and colorful which tricks the brain into thinking that it tastes better.
